Kick Your Competitor With Negative SEO?

Google in their help files once said that there is “almost nothing a competitor can do to harm your ranking or have your site removed” from their index.” I emphasized the almost, because it means, according to Google, there are some things a competitor can do to hurt your rankings.

A current article by Forbes takes a closer at “negative SEO.” Brendon Scott, the SEO-worker who’s interviewed for the article, says “I understand the rules of search ... And once you understand the rules, you can use them not just constructively, but also destructively.”

What Scott claims is that by posting a lot of spam-like links all around the web (links pointing to a competitor), the competitor in question might be buried by Google and Yahoo’s anti-spam algorithms. Scott says:

If a new site gains half a million links over the course of a weekend, it looks suspect from Google’s point of view ... So you make someone look naughty, and then get them caught.

I always figured Google would be smart enough to only raise the “bad neighborhood” flag when you link back to the bad neighborhood too (i.e. when there’s also something spammy going on on your domain, not just elsewhere). But perhaps Scott is right, and this problem of what some call “Google bowling” is real?

Google’s Matt Cutts also appears in the article, and admits that to some extent, Google bowling does work indeed. “I won’t go out on a limb and say it’s impossible,” Matt argues, “But Google bowling is much more inviting as an idea than it is in practice.” Perhaps Google engineers simply concluded that the pros of battling Google bowling don’t outweigh the cons, and since it’s not a widespread tactic yet, if you end up being bowled... well, tough luck, you’re having an exotic problem.

Other ways to throw dirt at competition to have them potentially get into ranking trouble, Forbes says, are:

reporting a competitor for using paid links (if they do indeed use them)
filing a copyright complaint against a competitor
push a competitor into the duplicate content trap by republishing their content on a “stronger” site
launching a Denial of Service attack against competition servers
commit click-fraud against a competitor’s AdWords campaign,

 NBA Notebook: Garnett-to-Suns deal downplayed

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

PHOENIX -- Reports the Phoenix Suns were nearing a deal to acquire Kevin Garnett were downplayed Wednesday by an NBA official with knowledge of the situation.

Contrary to several reports, the official told The Associated Press, the sides were not close to a three-team deal that would send Amare Stoudemire to Atlanta and Garnett from Minnesota to Phoenix.

Publicity regarding the Suns' possible acquisition of Garnett had been overblown, said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitive nature of the subject. However, the Timberwolves and Suns have talked about Garnett, the person confirmed.

A more likely scenario would have Phoenix trading up in the order of Thursday's draft, though few teams seem interested in moving down with what's regarded as a deep talent pool available.

Suns officials did not return telephone messages left at their offices Wednesday, but new general manager Steve Kerr indicated on Tuesday that anything that might happen probably wouldn't occur until Thursday.

The scenario being bandied about had the Suns sending Stoudemire to Atlanta, the Hawks shifting their No. 3 pick and other selections to Minnesota, and the Timberwolves shipping Garnett to Phoenix.

Another supposed deal would send Shawn Marion to Boston, with the Celtics giving Minnesota their No. 5 pick and Garnett coming to Phoenix.

Celtics general manager Danny Ainge deflated that report by saying it was "unlikely" Boston would trade its pick.

NBA INKS TV DEAL: The NBA's new television contracts with ESPN/ABC and TNT include rights to technologies that have yet to be invented, an indication of the importance the deals place on newer forms of media.

The eight-year extensions go through the 2015-16 season.

The current six-year contracts expire at the end of next season.

"I consider this to be a wonderful vote of confidence by our very sophisticated network partners who are making such a substantial and long-term commitment," NBA commissioner David Stern said.

The number of games televised on the networks won't change much. What's different are the extensive rights for the networks to broadcast games and other content on the Web and mobile phones.

TIP-INS: A federal jury began hearing a $20 million lawsuit against the Nuggets' Allen Iverson, who is accused of assaulting two men in a bar fight. ... Lakers center Kwame Brown underwent surgery on his right shoulder, and the team said he should be at full strength by the start of training camp in early October.
